Long ago, early in our country’s history, the Shakers designed what we now refer to as the peg rail. A peg rail is simply a length of wood with rounded pegs usually placed at 6 inch intervals. While peg rails do offer both charm and character to a space, back in the 18th century, they were intended to hold and store day to day household items. They were created to be functional. The Shakers believed in simplicity and hard work and a peg rail is a great representation of that.
While most peg rails long ago held everyday items like chairs (which were hung upside down at that time) and brooms, we now use them for both function and as decor. From kitchen goodies to hand towels, peg rails can be used to style most any space in your home.
With that in mind, I decided to style my peg rail for the fall season this year. I haven’t styled it for fall before, so I was excited to play around with it. Peg rail styling is very easy, you just need to be prepared to play around with your pieces a bit!
MY PROCESS
first – choose your focus
The first step was to pick and choose what I wanted to work with it. I found this amazing CORN sign at an estate sale a few weeks ago and I decided to make that my focal point. I continued the corn theme by using old corn seed packets (a recent antique store purchase) and by using real corn stalks.
next – style the pegs
In keeping with the likeness of the history, I decided to keep my peg rail simple. I filled the pegs with items that I felt the Shakers may have used during the fall season long ago. I added gourds and dried florals, both tied together using twine. Finally I decided to add a cheese box lid, also tied with twine. I felt it would balance out the entire space. The muted brown color and the round shape help to break up the white walls.
last – complete the look
I completed the look by adding in some crocks in various sizes. I feel that, like the peg rail, crocks are reminiscent of older times and they are always so easy to style. To finish off the look, I simply added in a mum and a few extra corn stalks for texture!
Our living spaces need to be a combination of both function and beauty. One piece that offers both is the humble peg rail. You can find these in all lengths for any space in your home. You can buy new or hunt for an old one. The options are limitless! Peg rails are an easy and simple way to add beauty to your home and peg rail styling is fun and pretty easy to do!
