Almost a decade ago, my husband and I purchased our home – the perfect spot to raise our family. It was close to my parents, it was close to the school, and … it was close to the very top of our budget. Because the house was at the top of our budget, my husband was very weary about purchasing it. However, I was already in love.
I could already envision our kids growing up here and I could see THIS HOUSE as the perfect home for our young family. But, I had just quit my job as a music therapist to raise our young kids and we also had them enrolled in private school. That meant that there wasn’t a lot of money in the budget for EXTRAS… and at the time, this house seemed extra. While Mark and I were crunching all of the numbers I made him a HUGE promise – I promised my husband that if we found a way to buy this home then I would NOT ask for a stitch of paint, furniture, decor, etc… nothing. I told him, just having the house would be enough for a long while. All I wanted were the bones. After all, it’s the people in it that make a home!
After hours of negotiating with the builder and many, many hours praying – the house was ours. I was so thrilled that I could hardly stand it and I was determined to keep my promise to Mark – no NEW items for the house until the time was right! In 2011 we moved from 1900 square feet to 4200 square feet. I was thrilled.
As promised I didn’t buy a thing – and I made do with what we had. The kids were so young then and honestly, decorating my house wasn’t a priority. I already had several beautiful things. I had many pieces of my grandparent’s antique furniture. I had antique an antique dinging room suit that we bought with our wedding money. I had several antique pieces that we purchased before kids. I also had that amazing bedroom suit from Macy’s. And … I had the new house! I was content.
As the months passed, we slowly began talking about adding pieces here and there to fill all the new square feet – but there wasn’t a lot of money to do it with. It was during that time that I realized I could furnish a home – beautifully – with items from antique stores, second hand stored, estate sales, and even yard sales.
As time went on I found all sorts of things for our home – on the cheap! From our new dining room table to our library shelves – I felt empowered as I decorated our new home this way! It wasn’t long before my sweet neighbor, Carla noticed what I was coming home with and she soon approached me with a business proposition – she asked if I wanted to open up an antique booth with her. When I asked her “why me,” her exact words were, “because I see all that great stuff you unload into the driveway each week.” It wasn’t long before Carla and I signed a contract on a small little antique booth … a 6 by 6 square foot space to be exact. That was the very beginning of my antique and vintage journey.
Carla and I enjoyed working together to stock our little space, but eventually she decided to go back to nursing and I was faced with a decision. I wasn’t sure if I could work the booth all by myself, but I decided to go for it. I worked hard and began to fine tune my distinct style. I soon realized that I preferred items with a weathered look and once I embraced my style, my business began to soar.
It wasn’t long until I added on a larger booth and then I moved to the very front of the store. Soon I opened a booth in a second store and then a third, and by 2014 I had five booths in three stores. My little business was really chugging along and was soaring. Then, in 2015, I decided to give my little booth business a name. I met a friend at Panera Bread and there – over a sandwich – I came up with Weathered Wares and Co.
Things would soon change though. Later that year, another neighbor invited me to join her in (what was suppose to be) a small side hustle, selling clothing. I deliberated the opportunity for a bit but ended up agreeing to join her. Within just a few months, that clothing business was booming and before I knew it – the side hustle became MORE than a full time job. With that, I had to really reduce the time that I was spending on my antique business. By the end of 2015, the three antique stores I was in had all closed their doors and I saw that as a sign. I decided to go all-in with the clothing business and I moved all of my inventory to one large booth at Kelly And Co Antiques.
The clothing business proved to be very successful financially but that success came at a cost. It kept me so, so busy that I found myself really missing the simple pleasures of life – and my antiques. Money isn’t everything! In 2017, after two years of running around like a crazy woman, the clothing business had run its course. I immediately turned my attention back to my antique business.
I was all in, and this time I had some marketing and business experience under my belt from selling all those clothes. In October of 2017 I opened an Instagram account, under the name @Weatheredwaredandco. I really didn’t know what it was all about – but I did know that people went there to share things that they loved. And I – having missed them all so very much – began sharing pictures of the antique finds.
After a while I began poking around the platform and I started interacting with other accounts. I slowly began to gain followers which lead me to have the desire to make content look ‘pretty.’ I then realized that instead of just posting pictures of the things I was finding I could also share how I used them in my home. In addition, I learned how to do IG stories. Stories is how I really connected with many of you. I love sharing my adventures in #EstateSaleLand and documenting how I was putting together my finds in my home.
As I shared more in stories (things like how to clean bottles and how to clean vintage linens) I began getting requests to start a blog – a place where these tips and tricks could be documented and accessed over time. I didn’t even really know what a blog was. Honestly, I hadn’t read a single one! I kept wondering: “Could I do that?” “Could I write a blog?” “Would people want to read what I had to say?”
I let those doubts hold me back for almost a year, but in August of 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, I decided to go for it. Starting a blog is a process and part of that process was deciding what to call the blog. I thought about just calling it Weathered Wares and Co (like my IG handle and the name of my booth business) but I felt that sounded more like a store. I wanted to have a blog name that was a bit more broad. I knew I wanted to cover all sorts of things on the blog: from family to recipes to antiques – and I wanted a name that would encompass all of that. I had bounced around several names and in the end I decided on My Weathered Home. I like that it mirrors my original business name – with the word weathered.
At the suggestion of a very successful friend and in an effort to simplify my ‘brand’, I have decided to change my IG handle to correspond to the name of my blog. I am now @MyWeatheredHome across all social platforms. I feel like having all of my socials be the same will be the easiest thing moving forward.
