I am always so excited when spring arrives because that means I can create little spaces that warm my heart – just like this little spring vignette.
Spring is almost here to stay and boy am I ready! I am so excited for the warmer weather this year and I can not stop daydreaming about all of the different ways that we can decorate for the new season. While it seems like I have a million ideas that I am excited to share, today I am focusing on this one tiny little area. Filled with ducks and flowers, it is a whimsical little corner that makes me smile and warms my heart.
If you have spent time with me before then you know that I enjoy my vintage finds. And while I do sometimes enjoy mixing old and new together in a space, today I am using only the things that I have in and around my home and garage! (The garage is where I chose to store a lot of my various staging pieces.) I am really excited to walk you through how this little area came together.
*NOTE: I feel I need to mention that I have no formal design training. I am just sharing my thought process with you all!
1. Find Your Space
I do vignettes in all sorts of places. Here I decided to use a plain table. I added an old, plain seed box with a lid to act as a ‘cabinet.’ This was an easy way to add interest and texture to the background of the space. I have to admit, I love working in tight spaces and using this seed box was a great way to help me define my space. As you can see, I am using some small pieces so staging this spring vignette inside the seed box helps those small pieces to NOT get lost in the mix.
2. Decided On Your Focus
It all started when I ordered a set of four small Tavern duck candles on Etsy. You can read all about the history of these little figure candles here, but basically these vintage seasonal/specialty candles have become one of my favorite things to collect and these ducks were a fun thing to add to my collection! I knew that I wanted to make these ducks (which I think just scream “SPRING”) the focus of this vintage spring vignette.
3. Build It Up
After gathering a few more ducks that I already had, the next step was to decide HOW I was going to showcase all of them. My brain doesn’t really have a rhyme or reason as to how I build out these vignettes. Many times it is trial and error – inside my mind. Today I just decided that I wanted to use kitchen tins. In hindsight, I guess I knew that I wanted to stack like items together to add height (at various levels) and I also wanted a small pop of color that wouldn’t really compete with the ducks. The red and creams worked (in my mind anyway) so I gathered all that I had and I got to work … stacking.
4. Find Supporting Items That Don’t Compete
This is the fun part for me. I love shopping my house to find little pieces to fill in gaps and holes. I also like to use these supporting items to add height where needed. For example, I decided to add in some old salt and pepper shakers that were red/white/creams to compliment the colors that I was already using. I also incorporated one that had some flowers to coordinate with the spring season. I must admit though, there was a lot of editing involved here. By that I mean, I had to move the smaller pieces around several times until I felt that it was ‘right.’
5. Add The Finishing Touches
I always like to top off my vignettes with a little extra something special and lots of times that involves live plants and flowers. Here I added in some daffodils and tulips that I recently picked up at out local grocery store. I already had the flowers in vases, and I just pulled out the flowers that I needed. While the tulips will not stay here, the daffodils will. I have those in a mason jar which is sitting inside the red tin! I love the added texture that the flowers add and their colors coordinate well with the little ducks! Plus, the flowers remind of spring time for sure!
Wrap Up
I set this vignette up in our bonus room and while I think it would be cute anywhere, I think it would look best in the kitchen. Mainly because so many of the items that I ended up using were vintage kitchen items. I also need to mention -AGAIN- that this spring vignette required a lot of editing and that is ok! I don’t ever want anyone to think that I can just whip a scene like this in a minute. And while some of you may be able to, it takes me time…. and sometimes it takes me a lot of time! However, no matter how long it takes, I find myself elated with each and every little vignette I create. My hope is that this somehow inspires you to create a little spring vignette that you love and that makes your heart happy. Cheers to creating spaces YOU love!
