It may still be summer outside, but today I am sharing a few simple fall decorating ideas to help you ease into the new season.
You guys, this is a special Tuesday! Our very first week of the 2021-2022 school year is behind us – my kiddos started last Tuesday. We are now BACK in the craziness of homework, after school activities, and sports! Summer is officially over for the Baker household. Time to put away those summer florals and pillows.
Every year, “Back To School” means a time of transition for our family and while I know it is still technically summer, “Back To School” marks the beginning of the fall season for me. In my mind, I am already feeling fall in the air! And, being a home decor lover, it really is part of my ‘job’ to hop on the new season ahead a little early. So, with that, I am sharing just a few simple fall decorating tips that I feel are really easy to implement and that won’t require a whole lot of effort!
Layer In Texture
My favorite simple fall decorating tip is to simply to add in layers of texture (that remind you of fall) in and around your home. Texture describes the way a surface looks and feels and to me, layering in texture for the fall translates into adding in the pieces that remind me of nature. I like to use things such as old wooden baskets and burlap and faux furs and nubby fabrics. Things that remind me of ‘warmth’ – if that makes sense!
Tip: If you want to add interest into a space without adding in too many colors then you may want to consider layering monochromatic textures. When several different textures are of the same color family, they can be really appealing without being too busy.
Add In Nature Itself
Last year I wrote an entire blog post about this topic (you can read that here) but I feel it bears repeating: Bringing the outdoors in is an easy (and cost effective) way to transition into fall. For example, last year I went into my backyard and grabbed several pinecones, and then I bleached them to give them a unique look. I also have snagged things like acorns and stones and branches – the list goes on and on – to use in my home.
When you are ready to begin decorating for fall, I challenge you to walk outside and take a look around to see if there is anything that reminds you of fall and that you think would work in your home. Just be sure to double check the items that you are bringing into your home – you DO NOT want to have any little critters inside!
Pillows And Blankets
Who doesn’t love a good pillow or blanket? I sure do. I especially like to have a few seasonal pillows and blankets because they are a very easy way to transition your home. It really doesn’t get much easier than tossing a new pillow on the couch! Last year I purchased my very first set of orange pillows – and I love them! This year, I plan to grab some ‘fall’ yellow ones – stay tuned. Just adding in a few blankets and pillows in fall colors will help you to make a easy transition into fall.

Fall Colors Throughout The House
I bet it will come as no surprise to you that I will soon begin to add in lots of fall colors throughout my home. And, the best thing is that there are so many great colors to choose from. From red pear to olive green to pumpkin orange, the list can stretch on for days! The main thing to remember here is to pick a color pallet that will work with the existing items in your home. For example, last year I had a ton of copper items throughout my home – so I was sure to add in several other items in that same “color family” to keep a cohesive look throughout. Especially because I have an open floor plan! Oh, and don’t forget that fall plaids are always popular too – click here to see what the difference is between plaid and tartan!
Create A Fall Vignette .. Or Two .. Or Three
Creating a fall vignette is a simple way to transition your home into fall. The best thing is that you have complete control over how big – or how little – you want the impact of that vignette to be. Below are a few vignette ideas to help you get started:
- Fill up a bowl with a few fall items such as stems or pumpkins. Click here to see how I styled an antique dough bowl for fall.
- Set up a little fall vignette on a coffee table or side table.
- Fall Centerpiece that include fall flowers such as mums.
The Sweet Smell Of Fall
This is an easy one, but simply lightening a new fall candle can really help you ease into the new season with very little effort. The warm glow and the sweet smell of a fall candle can transform your home instantly. Not a fan of candles? Try a fall stovetop potpourri recipe. The smell of fall can really make your home cozy!
Wrap Up
My hope is that this blog post will help to take off a bit of the pressure from having to jump in head first into all things fall. Easing into the season can make is seem a little less overwhelming and just adding in a few of these simple fall decorating ideas can help you do just that – ease into it!
