After a quick trip to Pikes I discovered something that I have never noticed before – grasses and today I am sharing these 5 eye-catching grasses for fall.
Yesterday while I was sitting on the back porch, I realized that all of my annuals have literally fried to a crisp – which is not unusual for mid-August here in Georgia. Today, I decided to go to Pikes and take a look around. Surly they had to have some ‘options’ for those of us that still want to have interesting plants around as we move from the dead of summer into fall.
Once I got to Pikes I found myself in my normal ‘spot’ – in the flower area, looking at all of the amazing flowers that they have. After admiring all of the beautiful colors I decided to get myself back on track! I needed to find SOMETHING that new to work with. I needed to continue the hunt for something new, something that would stand the test of time and that would not dry out and die as soon as I brought it home. After walking around the place with zero success, I decided to ask a very sweet Pikes Employee for some help. Good thing I did because wouldn’t you know it, he immidialaty knew exactly what I needed. He said, “You need a Fall Feature Grass.”
I moved fast to keep up with him as he quickly walked all the way to the opposite side of the store and as we turned the corner, there I saw it: the ornamental grass section. It was love at first sight. I instantly became a fan of ornamental grasses!
We do not currently have any grasses in or around our home – unless you want to count the dry grasses that I use during the fall season. I was excited to look at all the live grasses that Pikes had to offer and I carefully studied each one. After spending some time there today, I decided that I wanted to share with you 5 eye-catching grasses for fall, because maybe (like me) you were unaware that these beautiful grasses really even existed!
Inland Sea Oat
This ornamental grass is very cool. It has a ton of these flat leaves (or what the Pikes employee called seed heads) that turn dark green/brown in the summer and then they turn a reddish brown in the winter. They really do offer up a ton of color! He was quick to tell me what he loves most about this grass is that it moves in the wind and makes a really comforting rustling sound! You can read more about inland sea oat here.
Dwarf Pampas Grass
Pampas grass has been really popular the last several years and I think that is because the huge pampas plumes are just so darn pretty. The beautiful ivory plumes just stand tall and seem to majestically tower over its fine green arching leaves. It really is a beautiful contrast.
Switch Grass
Switch grass is sort of like a prairie grass that features small bluish foliage. These little blue plumes will last through winter and are great for interest through out the cold months.
Dwarf Fountain Grass
If I were to use one word to describe this grass would be – fluffy! Dwarf Fountain Grass is a really beautiful grass that is filled with small plumes that arch above green fountain of foliage. In the fall, the foliage turns a lovely golden brown color.
Maiden Grass
Maiden grass is a versatile grasses that is very versatile. It can stand alone in a garden but also works well with other grasses too. I really like the wheat-like seed heads – they remind me so much of fall.
Wrap Up
There are so many other amazing fall grass options out there. (Click here to see a few of the other options.) I suggest that you just visit your local nursery. But, be prepared to spend some money – these fall grasses are NOT cheap. They were all the same price, $29.99 plus tax. I saw that you can buy them at Home Depot too. Tap the arrow back and forth to see how much they cost there.
Take A Guess
I only got one today – but can you guess which one bought?
One More Thing:
While these are all outdoor grasses, what I love is that you can clip these live grasses and dry them out as you need to for spots inside your home. As you know, dry grasses can be very expensive! Why not grow your own! Just for fun, I am listing some of my very favorite dried grasses that I use around my home.
