Who doesn’t like to decorate for the seasons? Whether you go all out or add in just a few touches, these Fall Shelf Styling Tips just may help you a bit with your process.
Fall is officially in the air here in Georgia and we are loving it around here. I have enjoyed the cooler temps and I have also enjoyed working around the house to bring in my personal spin on fall over here at My Weathered Home.
Over the last month I have shared a few fall spaces with you all here on the blog, like this fall mantel and this fall table. Today I am sharing this cabinet all decked out for fall. I just love filling shelves with interesting and eye-catching pieces! Shelf styling is probably one of my very favorite ways to twirl my home – especially as the seasons change . Creating seasonal spaces in your home can be so inviting and shelves are a great place to do that. The possibilities are endless!
If you are new to seasonal decorating then shelf styling is a great place to start! With shelves, the space is already defined for you so that can make it easier to just jump in and just do it! I usually approach my shelves two ways: I either take everything out and start with a clean slate (you can see an example of that here) or I will just tuck in seasonal touched in and around the decor that is already on my shelves. That is what I did this time around.
Let’s take a moment to discuss “HOW” I came up with this space!
My Fall Shelf Styling Tips
- To start, I always like to begin with a good solid ‘base.’ I am lucky because the items that were already in this cabinet are neutral in color here (the old stoneware crocks, for example) and they provided a really good base for me. All I had to do was just layer in my seasonal items. An existing neutral base of decor on your shelves makes it super easy to add in any seasonal items in any color that you choose! They will always ‘match.’
- This fall, I chose to add in pops of orange and brass into this space! You really can’t go wrong with any fall color that you choose – as long as you are able to carry the same color throughout the space. You can click here for some of my very favorite fall colors this year. I am loving the orange this year for these shelves. I feel that the orange adds a rich color to the whole space.
- Next, I like to gather all of my items. I love adding in both vintage and new seasonal touches, it just depends on the space! For this cabinet however, I decided to stick with vintage pieces. I simply walked to my garage and grabbed a few items that I had on hand already. You could achieve this same look with new items too or a mix of old and new. Among other things, I chose to use vintage tins, vintage books, and vintage bottles.
- To begin the process of layering in all of the pieces, I like to step back and determine where I want to add my height. I usually add those in first. See the clock face up there, that was one of the first things I added to the space.
- Then, I like to tuck in items in and around the existing pieces. They have to make ‘sense’ to me as I place them – but this is the fun part! Get creative here. And remember, it is a process. I have to move little pieces around several times to ‘get it right’ for my eye. I also like to add in seasonal pieces in front of existing ‘base’ pieces. This really gives you a truly ‘layered’ look.
- The main goal here is to pull the fall color throughout the entire space – in and around all of the shelves. All the while, trying to achieve a cohesive look that is pleasing to the eye but that also makes sense too. It just takes a little patiences!
- After all of the main pieces are added in and the color throughout the cabinet is just right, I then add in natural items like gourds, pumpkins, and faux corn husks. I feel these natural elements just add an extra layer of interest – you can read more about adding in natural elements here.

Wrap Up
So, that is it … that is how my brain works. The steps above kinda describe how my little brain puts together my shelves. I use the same process for each season too.
