If you are vintage lover (and/or dealer) like I am then you are ALWAYS looking for really good places to shop. And, sadly, they are becoming harder and harder to find – at least in my area! Well, what if I told you that there is a magical place that pops up twice a year – full of the best vintage finds for as long as the eye can see. Luckily, there is such a place – Vintage Pickin.
I have had the pleasure of attending one of the coolest vintage market in my area, Vintage Pickin, for several years now so I can honestly say, this vintage market is the best around. My friend April, who runs Vintage Pickin, works very hard to bring in the very best dealers around the country, all of which bring their A-Game” in terms of true vintage merchandise and displays. One of the very best parts for me is the displays – they really are so very inspiring to me. I view these creations like ‘art.’
There was SO MUCH great stuff there that it was almost hard to take it all in. Everywhere you turned you were greeted with beautiful things to look at. Having been there and knowing how much stuff would be there, I decided I needed to make a ‘short list” of things that I wanted to keep my eyes peeled for. Although I knew I wouldn’t stay bound to this list, I did feel it would help to keep me focused as I shopped. The items I wanted to shop for include:
- Brown Transferware
- Old Basket
- Gurley Candles
- Old Cutting Board
- Vintage Christmas
Now, let’s see if I was able to find any of the things on that list above. I can tell you for sure that I went ‘way over’ my intended budget (not surprising) but I feel that I walked away with some real beauties for both my home and even for my vintage booth. Below, I am sharing most of my finds!
Brown Transferware
These two pieces of transferware stole my heart. If you follow me on IG then you already know that I have a small collection form my Grandmother! These pieces are both very similar to each other so they will pair well together! Both of these pieces came from a Kreative Antiques. I had the pleasure of meeting the sweet owner and she was so very kind.
Large Yellowware Molds
You can not really tell the size of these beauties, but they are really large! They have a ton of character – full of crazing, chips, and charm. Yellowware is considered earthenware and not quite as durable as ironstone so I expect to see some wear on these molds. I was so excited to find these large pieces – and I got them for a killer price. These two pieces came from Home To Roost. Their booth was so charming!
Canvas Head Mannequin
I found these guys at Bluegrass Market and although I know they are not vintage (hello, staples and they are both super clean and … if you flip it over you will see the ‘made in china’ stamp), I still felt they had a fun ‘look’ to use as a filler in my booth. The fabric heads will offer some great texture for sure! This booth was packed with amazing vintage paintings and trophies and baskets – such eye candy!
Cutest Drawer Ever
I saw this little drawer from across the way and I snatched it up quick! I got this drawer from my really good friend, Resurrect Antiques. I can just see this little guy all decked out for the holidays – filled with the perfect vintage Christmas finds! I can not wait to play around with this piece. Her booth was also packed with so many great pieces: from salvage to art she always brings the best stuff. Resurrect has a store in Woodbury too – not far from my home and I always enjoy visiting with her there as well.
Vintage Pile
Here again, I managed to find some more really cool and unique vintage drawers. I also love the little transferware creamer – that leaf detail is perfect for the fall. And, maybe even more exciting is that stack of butter pats. Those are all the rage right now! All of these goodies came from JBS Mercantile. They always have a great selection and a killer set up! This was the first booth that I walked into and I was amazed as always. I have been shopping with them for years at various events!
Cutting Board
I absolutely love this old cutting board. All the marks and wear and age really made this purchase a no brainer for me. I also love the really charming top – it’s uneven and I love that so much! This came from my friend Vintage Views and she was so very sweet. I loved getting to meet this lady! She also had a few friends working in her booth with her and I loved getting to see them too! I want to give a shout out to Crossroads 35173 and to my friend Nadine!
Oh, and I also picked up this really cool old clover lard bucket from Vintage Views as well right at the end of the show – on my second walk through! I love it because of the clovers for St. Patricks Day!
Vintage French Canning Jar and Other Goodies
I finally found a french canning jar! I haven’t really seen them out before – only online. I was happy to see this and was happy to be able to bring it home with me. I also loved this little mini creamer and the old game paddle. All are such cool finds. I got these goodies from two ladies that were working a booth together: My friends Lisa and A Rustic Mess. I have to tell ya, I was so happy to meet Lisa, she and I have chatted on IG often – it is always so nice to meet people in real life.
Ironstone Sugar Dish Without The Top
I saw this piece and was thrilled to bring it home. This ironstone sugar dish was a little cheaper than others because it was missing its top, but I don’t mind that! You can use these (without the lid) for all sorts of things: flower vase, pen holder, etc… And, it will be another great addition to my green cupboard. I got this from My Vintage Heart. Oh, and I also got this medium sized little crude display piece. I have an idea for it for the holidays.
Red And Green For The Holidays
I am always keeping my eye out for vintage Christmas finds to use during the holidays. And, it wasn’t hard to find vintage Christmas items thanks to The Purple Ottoman. I snagged a few tins and the cutest old Santa face from my pal Brandy. She had so much vintage Christmas at this show and it was so much fun to shop her booth because of it! I enjoy watching her collect vintage Christmas all season long on her stories on IG!
Holt Howard Plates In The Box
These also came from The Purple Ottoman and I felt they deserved their very own section here on the blog. I love them so much, especially because they came in their original box.
Gurley Candles
If you follow me on instagram then you will understand how happy I was to find these. I am always looking for these Gurley candles and I do NOT yet own these cute tiny Jack-O-Lantern candles. These were so exciting to find – I was so happy. I got them from The Homespun Heart as well as the Ironstone dish and the straw basket pictured below. While I was standing in their booth I saw so many vintage goodies being snagged up. They really had a great selection!
My Favorite Find
This is something that I have wanted for a while – and I finally found it from! Do you have any guesses? This is an old Stove Mat that would have been used to help protect the floor beneath an old wood burning stove. There is a metal side – which would have caught them embers from the fire and then there is this side – which I prefer! This side would have face down on the ground. This one is in really good shape and I got it from the sweetest dealer, Blue Sage.
Wrap Up
Well, as you can see, I found quite a few things that were on my short list and a few things that were not on my list at all. Even though I found a ton of things, I did have to work really hard not to buy even more. That is always the hardest part when I go to Vintage Pickin – not over buying!
This was such a great way to spend the day! Vintage Pickin is the perfect type of vintage market for me – a carefully curated group of vendors who pack not only their best stuff but also their creativity! The merchandise selection is the absolute best around in my opinion and then the displays are over the top. I was blown away by the amount of really great pieces there – and every single vendor was so very nice to visit with. I am already looking forward to the next show!
