I have fallen in love with this antique rustic kitchen cabinet and I think you will too! Come take a peek and see just how I styled it!
A few days ago I decided to make a change …. in the kitchen. I changed out some of the shelving that I had in there and I am so happy that I did. You see, we remodeled our kitchen last summer (you can see what changes we made here) and one thing that I couldn’t decide on during that process was whether or not to add open shelving (to the right of the stove). I didn’t want to rush the decision so I just decided to NOT add the shelving. After talking with my contractor, I knew that we could add in shelves at any time later, and I wanted to see how I liked that space with antique shelving options before we committed to permanent open shelves that were screwed into the wall.
Being an antique dealer, I tend to have several antique shelving options sitting around at any given moment, so I just decided (instead of installing permanent shelves into the wall), to leave the space empty – knowing that I would work with some antique shelves that I had on hand already! And that is what I have done with that space for the last several months – I have played around with a few shelving options that I had on hand already.
A few days ago, I decided to move a smaller cabinet from the dining room into the kitchen to see how I liked that – and boy am I glad that I did. In my opinion, this cozy rustic kitchen cabinet fits perfectly and I am loving it so far!
A One Of A Kind Auction Find
So, first of all, let me share a bit of information about the cabinet. I found this piece at an auction back several years ago and I snagged it for about $90.00. I can remember when it came up on the block, my palms began to sweat! I knew that I had to have it for my personal collection because, to me, it was simply charming – I particularly like the wavy bubbled glass. The other thing I liked so much about it is that it is such a great size. It is substantial enough that it can sit on a cabinet and not look too small but it is dainty enough to hang on the wall as well. It is just a really great piece.
A Little Added Bonus
Once I won this piece at the auction and got it home, I brought it right home and wasted no time getting it cleaned up. I was so happy to find that there was a little note inside one of the drawers there. Oh, what a gift to find it!
Cabinet Twirl
I had this cabinet in my dinging room full of mason jars for the last several years and one day after Christmas, I was looking at it and just noticed how narrow the depth was. It struck me right then and there that it would make a great option for my kitchen, because it is slim. While I liked it there in the dining room very much, I decided to give it a try in the kitchen. I unloaded all of the jars and carried it right over there and I LOVE it.
Fill Her Up
As soon as I got the cabinet to the kitchen counter, I knew she was staying there. Not only is it the perfect slender size, but the color of the wood is the perfect contrast against my white backsplash and it matched my bread boards which is a bonus – ha!
As soon as I realized that the cabinet would work, I gave her a good dusting and then jumped right in to filling up the shelves with goodies. This was the easy part for me – like so many of you, I love decorating shelves. I chose to stick with a few pieces of yellow ware and ironstone and then also added in a few of my recent crucible finds up top. I added in a small faux green plant there on the left and some napkins for texture. I decided to also add in a some wood pieces like the mortar and pestle and also the scrub brushes – which I actually use!
A Little Unexpected Star
I decided that I wanted to add in something a bit unexpected to finish off my “new’ rustic kitchen cabinet so I added in an old chicken mold at the very end. I wanted something a bit unexpected and different that the items that were layered in already ….and now I feel like she is kind of like the ‘star of the show.”
Something Sentimental
The sweetest piece that I added was the little jar that my dad found for me with the letter B on the lid – my last name is Baker. I was able to tuck it into a cubby there up top to show off the letter – which he was so proud of finding! This was a present he gave me for Christmas a few weeks ago. I am so happy to have found a home for it.
Add In A Seasonal Touch Here And There
I love to decorate thematically and seasonally and often times I will add in a hint of what ever ‘holiday’ is around the corner. Because Valentine’s Day is coming up, I decided to add in a few little jars with heart lids! I picked these up at Target a few years back but I bet you can find similar ones!
Up Top (Can Be A Hiding Place)
While I was really happy to fill the shelves, I was equally as happy to style the top of my rustic kitchen cabinet. I was thrilled to find a really great home for my huge Batter Bowl which I love as well as a few other goodies. This area is also where we keep our Alexa (smart device) and since we don’t use it for much other than music, I decided to put her up top and hide her behind a little stack. I always try to keep things inviting and functional!

Wrap Up
I have to admit, the idea of adding permanent open shelving in this space isn’t totally out of the question, but for now, I am loving my rustic kitchen cabinet.
I hope that you find this rustic kitchen cabinet as charming as I do and I hope that this inspires you to get creative with your kitchen shelves! Don’t be afraid to get innovated and to try something new … especially in your kitchen! Cheers and thank you for being here.

Swooning – so pretty – LOVE IT. I actually coincidentally did the same thing yesterday with my antique oak cabinet. I removed the new mirror they put in it and exposed the old cubbies inside. It is sitting in my kitchen now displaying some smalls and some country snowmen. I love your things and how you style them. Thanks for sharing.
