Want to learn about a few everyday items to make decorating easier? I’m sharing a handful of things that I like to use and that I think You Need To Know About!
If you follow along with me on Instagram then you know first hand how often I like to twirl things around in my home. I DO like to change things up and over the years I have found a few things that have come in handy when I am doing that. We all know about the little tricks that can make decorating easier such as command hooks and velcro dots, but today I am sharing a few other (and different) simple everyday items to make decorating easier that I think you may find handy.
Have you ever worked on a space in your home, like a mantle or a set of shelves, only to step away from them and get a sense that there as just something “not quite right.” I know I have many times. Now, I am not over here saying that everything has to be perfect all the time. Believe me, that is not the case over here at My Weathered Home (very rarely is there anything perfect around here). But there are times when I feel like I can tweak a thing or two to make a space seem even more effortless, cohesive, and pretty.
I will usually reach into my “bag of tricks” when I see ‘problems’ that I feel that I can fix easily. For example, sometimes I will need to adjust a piece of decor that I feel needs to be a touch higher (so that the overall space seems a bit more balanced). Sometimes I will need to hang something on the wall to fill in a bit of dead space – but I don’t want it to be there permanently so I will get creative. Sometimes I need to quickly clean up a piece that has a distracting smudge. Whatever it is, there are just some times when areas in my home could be ‘just a bit better’ and I am sharing what I use to help me fix them.
Simple Everyday Items To Make Decorating Easier
This Blue Sticky Tack
I first learned about LOCTITE FUN-TAK (click here to order) from my friend Lacey, a stylist that came to my house for a photo shoot with Better Homes and Gardens. She pulled out this “blue sticky tack” and used it to secure an ornament in place. I was immediately blown away (why hadn’t I thought about using sticky tack before) and I ordered a pack the very next day.
What I love most about this product is that you can use it on virtually any surface and it doesn’t leave any marks what so ever. I have used this stuff all over the house since last April. Most recently I used the sticky tack to hold up my little clover cookie cutter for St. Patricks Day.
This White Eraser
About 8 years ago, my good friend Carla taught me that erasers are for more than just removing pencil marks on paper. I was so surprised to learn that you can use an eraser, like this white pearl eraser (click here to order), to remove small smudges and marks on all sorts of things, from dishes to walls.
You always want to try test these things out in a non-conspicuous spot, but I bet that you will find that this removes lots of smaller ‘eye soars’ with ease! Most recently, I used the eraser on a white tin that had a large black smudge across the side. Now – it is like it was never there!
These Small Stackable
There have been a million times that I have needed to make something ‘taller.’ You know, I needed it to look like it was bigger that in actually is. Now, I will admit, I use a lots of different things as risers – usually what ever I can get may hands on in that moment. But, I have decided that for small, tight spaces, these little match boxes are really great. (Click here to order.) They are very inexpensive and they stack easily so that you can adjust the hight that you need.
These simple match boxes have proven to come in handy time and time again.
These Push Pins
Have you ever wanted to hang a small piece of decor or a picture, but you just didn’t want to put a nail hole in the wall? When this is the case for me, I just grab a push pin! Especially with shiplap walls, these little push pins work like a charm because you can just squeeze them in between the boards of the shiplap.
Let me just say too, over the last several years I have used a lot of pushpins and I do have a favorite shape and color. (Click Here to order.) I love their neutral color and the ‘squared off’ edges of the push pin help to hold thing in place nicely – more so than the really rounded/circle ones. Most recently, I used one to hang this heart right in the center of this cupboard!
These Clips
There are many times when I want to display a ‘paper good’ as decor. For example, I have used old cardboard signs and old book pages as decor. When I use these types of pieces, I want to be careful not to destroy them in any way. That can make displaying them a little difficult from time to time. I recently figured out that I can use a clip style paperclip (click here to order) to hold the piece of paper without causing any damage. I was so happy.
Here you can see that I used a clip (along with a push pin) to hang this old cardboard sign!

Thanks for the tips. I’ve used Tacky Putty for years. I’ve also used small clear acrylic display risers you can get on Amazon in various sizes. I just ordered the erasers and matchboxes – I’ve also used wooden coasters to add height too.

I use rice to stack bowls when I want to get a little lift. Also it will help steady a wobbly stack. Thanks for shayuour tips!
