Looking for creative ways to decorate with glass this fall? One of the most beautiful ways is to use Amber glass around your home.
Vintage amber glassware gets its name from its unique color, which is created by adding together iron, sulfur, and carbon. In the past, this type of glass was used for a variety of purposes, including making lamps, bottles, and windows. Today, amber glassware is seeing a surge popularity among collectors – especially around the fall season.
There’s something about amber glassware that just looks elegant, don’t you think? Maybe it’s the way the light shines through the rich, golden hue. Or maybe it’s the fact that amber glass has a bit of nostalgia attached to it. After all, vintage amber glassware was all the rage back in the day and if you’re lucky enough to have a piece (or pieces!) of vintage amber glassware, then you know just how special it is.
Collecting Vintage Amber Glass
If you’re interested in collecting vintage amber glassware, there are a few things you should keep in mind. There are many newer reproductions out there on the market, so it’s important that you do your research before making any purchases. Now, there is nothing wrong with reproduction amber glass at all, I have a few myself, but if you want true vintage amber glass then you just need to do your research. Here are a few ways you can tell:
- Check the seams of the glass. If they are rough and jagged, the glass is likely new. If they are smooth and consistent, the glass is likely old.
- Check the clarity of the glass. Newer amber glasses will be more cloudy than older ones.
- Look for bubbles in the glass. Older amber glasses will have more bubbles than newer ones.
Additionally, you’ll want to be sure to take proper care of your collection. Like any glass piece, amber glass is delicate and can easily be damaged if it’s not handled properly.
- Always wash your hands before touching your amber glass. This will help keep the oils on your hands from damaging the surface of the glass.
- Use a soft, dry cloth to clean your amber glass. Do not use any harsh chemicals or cleaning solutions, as they may damage the surface of the glass
- Store your amber glass in a cool, dry place when not in use. This will help protect it from moisture and humidity, which can cause damage over time.
- If your amber glassware has started to yellow over time, I read that you can revive it with a solution of one part vinegar to four parts water. Simply soak your glasses in the solution for 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water and let air dry. I have not tried this myself but I thought it was worth mentioning.
- If your vintage amber glassware becomes chipped or cracked, don’t despair! You can easily repair small chips and cracks with clear nail polish or epoxy glue designed for use with glass. Simply follow the instructions on the product packaging.
Amber Glass On Display
One of the best parts about collecting vintage amber glass is displaying it in your home and using it for special occasions – and I like displaying it for Fall.
In this set up I used a few pieces if Tiara glass in amber colors. Tiara Glass was marketed by Tiara Exclusives through home-parties held by sales agents, between 1970 and 1998. Made in the USA, Tiara operated for 28 years and their glass is very popular with some collectors but is also frowned upon by others. I see Tiara often when I am out and about shopping at estate sales and antique malls – and usually I pass it up … until my last buying trip! But, last week, I decided to buy a few pieces and play around with them here in my home.
I am not sure what made me actually buy these pieces this time – because I would usually just walk right past them with no interest what so ever – but there was something about the color of these glass pieces that just made me think “Fall.”
I went home with a handful of Tiara glass and got to work! I used a variety of other ‘fall’ pieces from around the house that I thought would enhance the beauty of the amber Tiara glass and that I also felt would fit into my fall theme!
If you don’t want to fill an entire shelf full – no worries! Simply fill an amber bowl with fruit on your kitchen counter or set the table with beautiful amber glass goblets. No matter how you choose to use it, vintage amber glass is sure to add a touch of elegance to your home décor.

I caansee the beauty of your Amber glass display.. I typically stay with Amber bottles.. And this email brought up something I’ve wondered about.. Was there a special reason why Pharmacist used Amber bottles for Rx? It certainly hid what was inside.. But I wondered if it was to help keep the sun light from waking the Rx.. Who knows, just something that crossed my mind.
