I am excited to introduce you to the very best green smoothie – just in time for Saint Patrick’s Day! I promise you will love it …. and I hope you won’t even realize how good it really is for you!
With Saint Patrick’s Day right around the corner, I thought I would share our favorite green smoothie with you all. I fix this treat for my kids each and every March 17th (as well as throughout the year) and the kids really do enjoy it! Now, I want to remind you (just like I reminded my kids the first time I served this to them), a green smoothie is a bit different than your regular mixed fruit smoothies …. we are drinking veggies after all! But, this is by far one of my absolute favs! I found this recipe online many years ago (I come across variations of it all the time) and I was thrilled when I discovered that it was packed not only with the fruit my kids love – but also tons of spinach. Each of these ingredients are nutrient dense and full of great vitamins and minerals – which is great for my family. While I did NOT invent this yummy goodness, I am excited to share it all with YOU nonetheless!
Packed With A Punch
Let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of each of the ingredients that we are putting in this smoothie! This isn’t a complete list of benefits, but after just reading just a bit, you will see that each ingredient does truly help to make our bodies strong and healthy!
Spinach
Spinach is packed with high amounts of carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, iron, and calcium. The vitamin C promotes skin health and immune function. The body needs vitamin K because it is essential for blood clotting. Did you know that one spinach leaf contains over half of your daily needs! Folic acid is essential for normal cellular function and tissue growth. Iron helps to create hemoglobin, which brings oxygen to our body tissue. And finally, calcium is good for our bone health! Calcium is also a good for your nervous system, heart, and muscles!
Pineapple
According to LiveScience.com, “pineapple may help you keep standing tall and strong. One cup of raw pineapple chunks contains 2.6 mg of manganese, a mineral that’s important for developing strong bones and connective tissue. And, like many other fruits and vegetables, pineapple contains a lot of fiber, which is essential in keeping you regular and in keeping your intestines healthy. Finally, pineapple contains significant amounts of bromelain, an enzyme that breaks down protein, which may help with digestion and bromelain has been thought to be helpful in treating osteoarthritis.
Mango
Mango is packed with polyphenol — a plant compound that function as an antioxidant. Antioxidants are important as they protect your cells against free radical damage. Mango is also a good source of immune-boosting nutrients. Mango is packed with vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, vitamin K, vitamin E and several B vitamins, which all aid our immunity.
Banana
Bananas are filled with potassium and that is one of the critical minerals that our bodies need in order to function well. Bananas are also packed with fiber which improves the flow of food through the digestive tract and aids in our digestion. And, according to facty.com, “bananas balance your stomach’s pH level which is essential in combating heartburn. Bananas do this by enhancing the protective mucus layer, which relieves pain and helps food to move faster through the digestive tract. Eating bananas can prevent acid reflux.”

A Few Tips:

- I like to use really ripe bananas in this smoothie.
- I sometimes will add my collagen powder in! It doesn’t change the taste of the smoothie one bit.
