We are in the midst of a huge kitchen remodel and today I am sharing all about the process of how we are choosing a kitchen tile that we love!
Today we decided to go to the ’tile store’ and shop around. As you know, we are in full swing of remodeling the entire kitchen (see how we got started with that process here) and one of the next steps is to add a tile backsplash. Like everything else, there are a million tile choices out there and at first I was a little overwhelmed by them all. But, after a bit of searching, I was able to wrap my head around the look that I wanted.
I found several inspiration pictures online (you can follow me here on Pinterest to see them) and I studied them over and over again. I was able to find one I was drawn to online, but I had to see it in person just to make sure. Maybe I would like something else? How would I know if I didn’t go and look at all the options? With that, we all went to look around today. I walked into the store with a vision in mind but I also knew there would be a ton of options. Here is how I narrowed it down!
Things To Consider When Choosing A Kitchen Tile
Color
After a lot of consideration, we decided to go with a white tile. One if the main goals of this kitchen remodel is to lighten the entire space. We felt that white tile would help us to accomplish that.
Shape
Once we arrived at the tile store I quickly realized that there were MANY tile shapes to choose from – who knew? Some of the choices include:
- Rectangle
- Square
- Hexagon
- Octagon
- Round
- Diamond
- Geometric
As we were searching, I realized that some of the options could go horizontal or vertical as well. That is something you may want to take into consideration as well if you plan to choose your kitchen backsplash.
We ultimately decided to go with a square shape – I am excited about that!
Size
You can buy tiles in all shapes and sizes. Some options come in ‘sheets’ while others are sold ‘individually.’ The tile we chose is 5×5 and is sold by the piece.
Finish
I also didn’t realize that this would be a consideration we would have to make. There are a few finishes that you can choose from and they include:
- Textured
- High Gloss/Polished
- Matte
- Multi-finish
I knew immediately that I didn’t want a textured backsplash (we just ripped out a textured back splash), so that helped to eliminate several options right off the bat! We ultimately choose a tile that was polished!
What We Chose Today
I walked into Floor and Decor today and was able to confidently choose our tile. I had a clear vision in mind thanks to some inspiration pictures I had saved. But, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that we were able to find a tile that we love but the bad news is that they only had 39 tiles in stock.
We fell in love with the Zellige Perla Polished Ceramic. This tile matched so many of the inspiration pictures that I kept going back to. However, we will have to order it online and pay to have it shipped …. bummer!
So, we walked out with 5 pieces of the tile just to ‘try’ it out and to make sure we liked it. I think it is safe to say that we are going to move forward with this one – or one just like it if we can’t find enough of this particular one!
Stay tuned as we continue the kitchen renovation journey! My hope is that if you ever choose to go down this road that these blog posts will help you in some small way. Thanks again for visiting the blog and for taking time out of your very busy day to read along!
