I love to think outside of the box when it comes to decorating … especially around the holidays. With that in mind, come see what I added to my Christmas tree in the kitchen this year.
I always enjoy putting up Christmas trees around the house every year. We have a live family tree that the kids love to decorate. We have an artificial tree upstairs that I decorated with all of my vintage ornaments. And, now, we have this charming live Christmas tree in the kitchen.
I shared this tree on Instagram (you can follow me here) last night and have gotten a lot of questions about it, so I thought I would just share a few of the details here on the blog for you all.
The Tree
The first thing you need to know is that this is a live tree that I purchased from Home Depot. I like to get a few of these every year to sprinkle in and around my home. Not only do these mini Christmas trees add the perfect holiday touch to any room, but they also smell great! These mini trees come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and I really love getting the ones that are short and squatty.
The Bowl
I popped my mini Christmas tree in this oversized stone ware bowl that my friend Carla gave to me. It is the perfect size for this tree to sit inside. The tree actually comes with a little red tree stand attached, and the stand fits perfectly inside the bowl. To fill in the extra space within the bowl, I filled in with some crumbled up tissue paper and then covered the white tissue with green moss.
The “Ornaments” On The Tree
This was the fun part. I love to get creative when I decorate – thinking outside of the box is so much fun. During the summer I came across a collection of mini bowling pins while I was out pickin’! When I saw them I knew immediately that they would make the perfect ‘ornaments” for my Christmas tree in the kitchen this year. They were a great price so I scooped them all up. While I had several colors to choose from, I decided to only use the natural wood colored pins and the red pins. I did put just a few of the green pins down below the tree for added interest.
Oh, and I used floral wire to attach the pins to the tree! I also made sure to space them out well because I didn’t want to go overboard with the bowling pins.
I just wanted to add enough so that they could be seen but not over power the beauty of the actual tree.
Decorating Under The Tree
After stepping back, I noticed that I needed to make this space a little more interesting so I decided to go all out UNDER the tree here in the kitchen. I wanted to stick with the look and feel of the unpainted bowling pins and in order to accomplish that l simply piled in some of the kitchen items that I had that were similar in color. I used old butter molds and rolling pins and mashers. I used a few crocks and bread boards too. I even added in one or two bowling pins (In the color green) – for a little moment of discovery there beneath the tree!
Oh, and for the first time ever, I decorated with these spice canisters.
I love this spice set so much and I am so happy to have finally found the perfect spot to use them here under our Christmas tree in the kitchen.
The Final Details
I decided, at the very last moment, to add in a few of old plain red mercury glass ornaments inside the bowl there below the tree. I just felt that the pops of red helped to tie in the red bowling pins.
Wrap Up
I have really enjoyed sharing my home with you all here on the blog this holiday season and I really am happy with the way this Christmas tree in the kitchen came together. It’s like this space has an ‘old world Christmas’ feel to me when I look at it. But, I have to admit, I never really thought that I would decorate a tree with old mini bowling pins – but here we are – and I think it works! I hope that this blog post will inspire you to think outside of the box and that you will always choose to go with what YOU are drawn to.
Cheers to the unexpected!
