Want to see how I used my recent haul of dried hydrangeas? They are sitting pretty in the cupboard for fall!
Are you looking for a vey simple way to help you (and your home) transition into fall? Something subtle and inexpensive? Consider dried hydrangeas! They can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space. Let me show you what I did with my most recent ‘dried hydrangea” haul!
Dried hydrangeas are having a moment. And I can see why! They’re unique, beautiful, and last much longer than fresh flowers. Plus, they’re perfect for people like me who want to enjoy the look of fresh flowers without the hassle of having to replace them every week. Whether you use them as a standalone decoration or incorporate them into a larger arrangement, I am sure that you’ll love the way they look in your home just like I do.
Recently, my neighbor gifted me with a haul of really large dried hydrangea blooms! These blooms are so very big and the various colors within each bloom makes each and every one unique. As soon as I got them I decided to tear off all the excess leaves on their stems, being careful not to pull off any of the petals! My neighbor left the blooms on very large stems, which I think just add to their character, but I decided to trim down a few of them using scissors after I decided that I wanted to add a few into my cupboard.
A few days before I was gifted these blooms, another pal gifted me a load of brown transferware (yes, I have some great friends). I decided that these two ‘gifts’ would look really good together so I got busy adding them into my chippy white cupboard. Not only did I use the brown transferware and dried hydrangeas but I also used a variety of stoneware pieces and old wooden items to add height and interest. I also threw in some white pumpkins as well – because it is almost fall after all! This area was actually inspired by another set of fall shelves that I did with my grandmothers old dishes. You can click here to see that capture over on instagram!
As you can see, I used the hydrangeas is as an accent in a few places. On the top shelf, I used an old stoneware crock as a vase and simply filled it with as many blooms as I could. I experimented with different heights to create an interesting look. I also laid one giant bloom inside an old dry measure. Lastly, I just popped a few smaller blooms here and there to keep the shelves looking cohesive. Finally, I added in just one additional dried floral there on the middle shelf for extra color and texture!
How To Dry Your Own Hydrangeas
- Cut the blooms off the stem of the hydrangea using sharp scissors.
- Remove any leaves on the stems.
- I like to hang my hydrangeas upside down as they dry. I use twine to wrap up a bundle and then I create a little loop to hang them from.
- Place the blooms in a cool, dry place for a week or two.
- Once the blooms are dry, trim the stems to your desired length (or you can remove the stems all together) and use them in your decorating projects!
