I am so excited to FINALLY be sharing our kitchen remodel reveal. After two months and a little hard work – we did it! Come see our new kitchen!
I am excited to be sharing my kitchen reveal with you all here on the blog- finally. I have been waiting to share this space with you all here and we finally finished a few little small details. For the most part it is all DONE!
We have wanted to renovate our little kitchen for a long, long time but we knew it would be pricy. As you can imagine, three kids (and private school) takes up a lot of our extra money, but over the course of a few years we managed to save enough money to make it happen. Now, I did have to pick and choose how we were going to spend our money (because let’s face it, things add up really fast when you are doing a renovation). I enlisted the help of a really great friend, Missy Hume, who happens to be a designer and with her help we decided what the best plan of action was.
Missy’s biggest suggestion was that we remove the original cooktop, oven, and microwave and the cabinets that they were in. We then reconfigured the bottom cabinetry and removed all of the upper cabinets that were on the wall where the vent hood is now. Those suggestions really helped to open up the kitchen, especially as you walked in from the garage. She also recommended that we redo all of our cabinets (I wanted to add in new shaker style cabinets that are so popular now) but I decided to save money and just paint the existing cabinets. I am so happy I did that because the extra money allowed us to splurge on this really great range! (I get asked often for sources for things that we used – so I am including those there at the bottom.)
I also originally wanted to move the bar and create a kitchen island. With the help of my friend, we realized this wouldn’t be a good choice because we would basically be changing the footprint of the kitchen and that would cost move money than we had in our budget. Not to mention, we would have to redo all the flooring in the house too since we didn’t have any extra flooring from back in 2011 when the house was built. The compromise was dropping the bar down – and again, I am thrilled with the way it turned out.
I also want to touch on the vent hood. We purchased our vent hood from Hoodsly. I was really happy with there selection and it was honestly hard to choose. We ended up going with the Sloped in white. However, assembling this hood was challenging for sure. You see, we did not have the option to buy a hood that vented to the outside because our stove sits in the middle of the kitchen – we had to buy a hood that had a recirculating vent – luckily Hoodsly had that option for us. We had to buy extra “recirculating kit attachments” (through Hoodsly) and additional duct work to make it work properly. Our contractor was able to assemble it for us. It wasn’t easy but I am really happy with the way it turned out.
The pulls that we used were from Amazon and we had a hard time with them as well. The old pulls were not ‘level’ and once we painted the cabinets and drawers we quickly realized that. The new white paint seemed to highlight the fact that they were NOT level. Our contractor just used his drill to even out each drill hole and luckily, the pull that I chose, had a ‘cap’ on each end. That cap hides the ‘correction.’
While we did hire a contractor to do some of the big ticket items: drop the bar, rewire the outlets, etc… but, Mark and I did do some of the work ourselves. We removed the cabinets and did the board and batten under the bar and we painted walls and trim. All of this work that we did helped to cut down costs a bit (because we paid our contractor hourly/by the day.) Another thing that we did to recuperate a little bit of money was to sell our old granite on FaceBook Marketplace. While we didn’t get anywhere near it’s real value, we did make a few hundred bucks to put towards the extra costs that were adding up!
During the course of the kitchen remodel I did share several blog posts along the way. Ina n effort not to repeat myself (smile) you can check them out below!
You can read all about the tile that we used here.
You can read all about the paint color we chose here.
You can read all about the faucet we chose here.
You can read all about the counters we chose here.
In case you missed any of the sources for the kitchen renovation or just in case you need a reference for later, here are the links to many of the items that we used! While we did need some rally big ticket items, I really didn’t buy too many smaller items for the remodel. I do have to say that the spice rack is kinda my favorite “small change” that we mede!
Also, once the kitchen was done I got some new cookware. You can see my favorite new pans here.
Lastly, you can see a VERY similar version of the counter stools that I purchased here. I can not find the exact ones but these are the very same thing (same brand and colors and even the same foot guard), only mine are not tufted.
There were a lot of ups and downs with this kitchen remodel. We started this project on May 13th and we finished up with our contractor around July 22. It took a little over two months to finally make my dreams of a lighter and brighter kitchen remodel come true! I hope that sharing our process helps to inspire YOU to get out of your comfort zone and start a remodel project yourself.
Fun side note: I have been struggling with something … was this a kitchen remodel or a kitchen renovation. I wasn’t sure which one it was so I did a little digging on the internet and discovered that while a remodel and a renovation are similar – there is a difference. According to Google, “A renovation and remodel are different. While a remodel is changing the form of something (adding a new shower to an existing bathroom), renovation focuses more on restoring something old into good repair (fixing up a creaky floor, for example.)”. So, technically, since we moved some cabinetry and we had to rewire several outlets, I am calling this a kitchen remodel!
