I am sharing all about how I use plaid for the holidays and I am including both old and new items as well!
Just like so many of you, I love you use plaid for the holidays in and around my home – especially for the holidays. While there are a ton of plaid options out there – from clothing to blankets – today I want to stick with metal/tin plaid finds! You know, things like:
Now, I prefer the look and feel of vintage plaid items – that is probably not a huge surprise to those of you who know me on IG! I can find vintage plaid items very easily when I am out hunting (you can follow me for my “pickin’ adventures here) … but recently, while out running errands around town, I found vintage inspired plaid items that were new. I picked up two for myself to mix in with my old ones this year for Christmas. Finding these new (but certainly with a vintage feel) plaid pieces inspired me to share all about plaid here on the blog today. I am going to give you 5 quick and easy ways to decorate with plaid items for Christmas and then I am sharing some of my very favorite plaid pieces from around the web.
Fill Them With Greenery
You can do this with easily with a vintage thermos. You could use real or faux greenery and actually many times I will simply cut pines limbs from our back yard and just pop them in. This is a super easy and quick way to incorporate plaid into your home!
Stack Them Up High
I love the idea of creating a tapering stack of plaid – almost like a plaid Christmas Tree of sorts! This would be a great way to use the picnic baskets and the lunch boxes – one right on top of the other!
Create A Vignette Inside
This would work well using a plaid lunch box or maybe a plaid picnic basket. You could simply fill the inside of the plaid vessel with faux ‘puffy’ snow – and create all sorts of interesting holiday vignettes inside. For example, I can imagine a beautiful putz house village right inside one of those plaid pieces! I think that I might do this on IG with you all this holiday season!
Fill The Shelves – Make Plaid The Star Of The Show
I love displaying things in this way because it is an easy way to make a big impact. Filling shelves with variations of plaid is an easy and fun way to do it! You could go big and fill the shelves full or you could add just a few pieces. Either way, the plaid will be eye catching!
A Plaid Pop
I think using a plaid item within a larger holiday display (for interest) is also a great way to incorporate them. For example, you could use pops of plaid in your coffee bar or within you table scape. I also like to use plaid items (like this lunchbox) as a riser …. it isn’t the star of the show, but it adds interest!

A Quick Note: I would say that some of these vintage plaid items could indeed be used for what they were originally intended for. While I do not use these vintage plaid items in this way, as long as you give yours a really good clean and inspect them (especially the thermoses – like their liners). Here is a great article I found online describing ways to clean your thermoses.
