With fall right around the corner, I thought I would spread a little ‘”Autumn Cheer” and share a few of my past ‘repurposed vintage fall decor ideas.’ These vignettes are really easy (and fun) to recreate! Simply shop your home (or your garage) for similar items and get to it! The best part – there is no right or wrong way to recreate these looks. Let your imagination – and your fall goodies – sweep you away!
REPURPOSED CUBBIES
Have you ever looked at something from a distance and know exactly how you were going to use it? Well, that was the case with these cubbies. This old piece came complete with old pencil markings and grease stains. I imagine that it once lived in some man’s workshop but now it lives with me. Last fall I decided to layer in some straw, along with my other vintage goodies, to give it a slight fall feel. Adding the texture of the straw gave this piece a little nod towards fall … without being too obvious! If you don’t have a cubby at home then you may want to try using a crate or old wooden box. Fill it with some straw and layer in your favorite goodies.
REPURPOSED TOY TRUCKS
This little toy truck actually belongs to my dad. I spotted it in his collection last fall and I asked if I could ‘borrow’ it. It was the perfect muted color and it had the perfect amount of rust. I knew right away it would be a great little vessel to hold my white pumpkins! Of course dad said yes and of course it really came together well. If you don’t have an old rusty truck laying around you may want to try using an old (large) scoop or even an old bucket instead – I would recommend laying the bucket on it’s side and have the pumpkins ‘spilling’ out.
REPURPOSED VINTAGE BAGS
I have a collection of old canvas bags. Most of them are military but I also have a few old tool bags and a golf bag too! Over the years I have stuffed them up with all sorts of things but here I simply filled them with some brown stems that I picked up for a steal during the summer. I do love how the stems really bring out the warmth of the canvas. If you don’t have any old canvas bags then perhaps try mixing stems along with old grain sacks or old linens instead. You can get really creative with that combination!
REPURPOSED FALL BASKET
Rusty old baskets are perfect for staging just about anything. This is an old bicycle basket, but a locker basket could work too. Here I threw in some pumpkins along with some old sheet music to keep things interesting. Adding the sheet music, along with the small puff of straw, added just the right amount of texture to the little pumpkins. If you don’t have an old metal basket then perhaps you can use an old woven basket. I love staging inside woven baskets as well and those are really easy to find.
REPURPOSED AMBER BOTTLES
Old repurposed bottles of any kind are always fun to incorporate into your home and these amber ones are perfect to use during the fall. Here I have a mix of old clorox, snuff, and medicine bottles. Each year I style these bottles in a large grouping because, in my opinion, they really do make a fall statement. If you don’t have the amber bottles then you can also use old clear bottles – and I would pop in wheat stems/dried florals to give them more of a fall feel.
I LOVE to repurpose items around my home and I enjoy the idea of taking everyday items and transforming them into something that can be admired. It is my hope that these few examples of repurposed fall decor ideas inspire you to dig around your home (and garage) and create a fall space that is just your style. I can not wait to see what you come up with.
