Have you ever wondered how to display your vintage tree toppers? Why not try your hand at ‘planting’ them! Let me show you how!
I have a small collection of vintage tree toppers that I have gathered over time and I enjoy putting them out each Christmas season. This year I wanted to try something new! Boy, am I sure glad that I did.
Being creative with the way I that I display my collections is something that I love to do! With that in mind, this year I thought it would be fun to create a ‘vintage tree topper planter.’ I liked the idea of mixing the softness of the toppers with the harshness of the of the cement. And – the moss is what tied it all together.
The Process
Choose Your Vessel
I decided to use a perfectly weathered vintage cement planter that I already had in the back yard. You could choose any vessel that works for you. I would love to try this in a crazed ironstone tureen!
Fill Your Vessel With Dirt
I just used good ol’ potting soil for this little project. I decided to create a ‘mound of dirt’ in the center so that the toppers would not all be ‘level.’ I felt this would create a little more visual interest.
Layer In Your Picks
After picking my planter and filling it with dirt, I just sprinkled in these old receipt picks here and there inside the planter. I was careful not to put one directly in front of another as to not block one from view.
NOTE: Earlier this year I came across an entire collection of vintage receipt picks for a steal! As soon as I spotted them I knew that they would be the perfect ‘stands’ for my vintage tree toppers. I couldn’t buy them fast enough! If you want to recreate this look and can not find picks – do not worry! You could easily use wood skewers or dowel rods instead! Simply insert them into the dirt, making sure they are deep enough not to tip over. (We wouldn’t want to break any of those toppers!)
Cover With Moss
Once the receipt picks were layered in, I covered the entire top of the planter with sheets of moss. I used this moss. I love the fact that the moss softens up the entire space. I also love that the moss covers the bases of the picks and helps to give this entire space a cohesive look!
Add Your Vintage Tree Toppers
This was my favorite part – simply slide your vintage toppers right over top of the picks! Instantly, you create this amazing topper planter. It almost seems like the toppers become flowers! It is so fun to see it come together!
Add In Any Extras
I decided to added in a few extra ornaments around the base of the planter as well as on top of the moss. I choose to use the more ornate antique glass ornaments, to match my favorite sweet little tree toppers.
The Final Product
Sometimes you just have to ‘go’ with it… and that is exactly what I did with my vintage tree toppers this year! At the last minute I decided to ‘plant’ them and I am so excited with the way it turned out! I hope this inspires you to think outside of the box – literally! Merry Christmas to each of you.
