Despite the crazy year we have all had, I somehow have still managed to recently find some very unique antiques. Adding these beauties into my home and styling them just the ‘right way’ is probably my favorite pastime and I do like to ‘doll them up’ certain times of the year. Fall is certainly one of those times. With that in mind, I want to share a few of my most recent antique finds and how I will be styling them for fall.
Before we jump in, I do feel it is important to note that there is a difference between antique pieces and vintage pieces. A piece is considered to be an antique if it is 100 years old or older. A piece is considered to be vintage if it is from an earlier generation but less than 100 years old. (You can check out a few ‘Vintage for Fall’ ideas here.)
Antiques for Fall: French Escargot Pots
A good friend sent these my way and as soon as I opened the package, I squealed with delight! These fantastic little stoneware pots are so small and unique and I am thrilled to add them to my antique stoneware collection. Best of all was the little handwritten tag that came along with them. It read, “We collect these escargot pots one by one from the flea markets across the French countryside!” These tiny pots are from the early 20th century and were used to present snails and escargot. How cool is that! I plan to keep these cuties out year round, but for this season my idea is to fill them with dried chamomile and let them fill the air with the sweet smells of fall!
Antiques for Fall: Plum Drying Rack
I was recently digging in my friend’s barn and I found the most amazing treasure. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what it was at first. I figured it was some sort of rack, but I had no idea what it was used for. Because I like things that are unusual and primitive, I decided to scoop this piece right up! Even though I didn’t know for sure what it was.
Turns out that this is an old plum drying rack. Plums would be placed on these racks to be dried out, originally by the sun and then later by drying ovens. What’s even cooler is that these drying racks were commonly found in France. I felt this piece of French agriculture would really shine hanging on the wall. And, while it really makes a statement “as is,” I felt that adding a sweet fall wreath to the center would add just the right fall touch!
Antiques for Fall: Yellowware Molds
Yellowware is a term used to describe a type of earthenware that was made using a yellow-hued clay. It originated in Scotland in the late 1700s and by the mid-1800s yellowware was being produced here America. Long ago, these molds were used for food such as pudding. However, I would not use them for that purpose today. While they are beautiful two look at, the glaze used on many yellowware pieces contains lead. Instead, I choose to use these pieces around my home, especially during the fall months, because of their buttery yellow color. I particularly like to prop up my corn mold during for fall!
As you can see, it really is easy to use “non-traditional fall decor” in your home. I most enjoy using antiques in unique ways each season and I hope that this inspires you to go out and hunt around your local antique stores! Remember to think outside of the box when shopping for antiques for fall and don’t be afraid to try something new!
Oh, and one more thing! Below I have linked a few Etsy shops that carry the antiques that I mentioned above. Simply hover over the image for the price and click to shop! Happy hunting my friends!
